Keith Haring began in New York’s alternative art community as a graffiti artist on the streets and subways of NYC, far from the city’s galleries and museums. While the works of most graffiti artists generally remain as street art, Haring’s work can be found both on the streets and in prestigious museums.
Full of innovation and energy, Haring’s own artistic expression was inspired by his pop artist contemporaries. His youthful expression of graphic art resulted in vibrant, fun pop art. Throughout his career Haring devoted much of his time and talent to creating socially-conscious artwork, and created over 50 outdoor communal works of art.
One of Haring’s most famous works is the 1986 “Crack is Wack” mural, which still adorns New York’s FDR Drive. In 1986 Haring opened the world-renowned “Pop Shop” retail store for his pop art in SoHo, NYC. His bright, colorful, iconic pop art works such as “The Baby”, “Barking Dog” & “Glowing Television Sets” now span the world – as Haring brought this “alive” pop art abroad.
